RE:  We Are Woman National Rally for Women’s Rights Scheduled for August 18, 2012

Washington, D.C. - In less than two weeks, a grassroots organization called We Are Woman will bring thousands of women, men, and children from across the United States to Washington for a national rally in support of women’s rights, illustrating the power of women and their allies to fight back against what can only be described as a national war on women.  The rally will take place on the West Lawn of the Capitol from 11am-4pm.

Beginning with just a few like-minded individuals, We Are Woman has grown in strength and number to receive support and participation from Planned Parenthood, as well as endorsements from NOW, Feminist Majority, the American Association of University Women, CODEPINK, the National Council of Women’s Organizations and its ERA Task Force, the National ERA Alliance, Rock the Slut Vote, the Rainbow Push Coalition-Florida, Moms Rising, and many other groups and individuals. The organization’s most recent endorsement comes from the Coalition of Labor Union Women.

The list of prominent speakers recently expanded to include Bonnie Grabenhofer, the Executive Vice President of NOW and Laura Meyers, CEO of Planned Parenthood in Washington D.C. Previously confirmed speakers include Mara Keisling of the National Center for Transgender Equality, Virginia’s 7th district congressional candidate Wayne Powell, Sandy Oestreich of the National ERA Alliance, and Virginia Senator George Barker. Roberta Francis of the ERA Task Force will be speaking with Bettina Hager of the National Women’s Political Caucus. Musical performances and comedy will round out the event, and additional artists and activists are signing on daily.

We Are Women’s co-founders met online earlier this year, bonding over shared disgust with the political establishment and the mistreatment of women by congressional representatives, state legislators, governors, and political pundits. Inspired by Erin Nanasi’s viral video, “We Are Warriors,” they began organizing immediately.

They explain, “This rally is our way of standing up to say, ‘No more!’ to the war on women. We are strong, powerful, loving, and brave. We are America. We are Woman.”

The rally will center around three prominent themes which include reproductive rights, equal pay, and the necessity of the Equal Rights Amendment to secure these freedoms for women now and in the future. Speakers from all walks of life will be providing education regarding current and proposed policies that disproportionately, negatively affect women. Informed voting is expected to be a hot topic given November’s critical presidential and congressional elections.

What started as a few women with an idea has quickly turned into a national movement. The co-founders have released a statement saying, “We will be heard. On August 18, we will stand together and tell the world that American women are a political force to be reckoned with.”

They add, “Come join us, if not for yourself, then for your mother, or your sister, or your daughter.  For the future.”

7.17.12 Washington, DC – With recent endorsements from Rock the Slut Vote, the Florida Rainbow Push Coalition, and Equality Florida, as well as congressional candidate Wayne Powell, the We Are Woman rally scheduled for the west lawn of the United States Capitol on Saturday, August 18th, is shaping up to be a critical event in the movement against the modern-day war on women. Organized in support of “rights affecting our bodies, our health, our families, our livelihood, and our future,” the rally is expected to draw women, men, and children from all over the United States.

Across America, volunteers have come together to organize publicity, speakers, supplies, and facilities for the event. The current speaker line up includes Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida, Rev. McKenzie, coordinator from the Rainbow Push Coalition, and Virginia’s Wayne Powell, as well as musical performers, comedians, and other activists.

Affordable transportation is available via bus and carpool, and attendees are coordinating travel and lodging through the state forums on WeAreWoman.us. Interested supporters are invited to sign on and begin making plans with local rally-goers.

Donations from individuals and organizations are also being collected to support the rally. Sponsors can learn more about funding options from WeAreWoman.us. A CafePress store has also been created for both fundraising and visibility.

Erin Nanasi, founder of We Are Woman and whose “We Are Warriors” video inspired the rally, explains how We Are Woman is drawing people from all genders, races, backgrounds, and political ideologies to the cause: “For those of you who think this rally is just about women's issues, you're wrong. Understand that we, women, are at the forefront of this movement, but we are not alone. Anyone, everyone, who does not fit the new congress' narrow view of what America should be is in danger.”

In anticipation of November's critical presidential election and in retaliation for more than a thousand anti-women laws being passed through state houses throughout the United States, We Are Woman expects a large and enthusiastic crowd to remind state and federal legislators, “We are women, and we are watching.”

The co-founders of the event say that they are looking forward to, "Joining with others all over the country to stand shoulder to shoulder and shout 'No more!'"

6.21.12 Washington, DC – Founders of the We Are Woman March have secured a permit to rally on the west lawn of the United States Capitol on Saturday, August 18th. Marching for “rights affecting our bodies, our health, our families, our livelihood, and our future,” the rally is expected to draw women, men, and children from all over the United States.

Though the event was originally planned for September, construction on the National Mall foiled the group's efforts to secure a permit for that month. Permit Team Leader Alaina LaTourette was able to work with the Capitol Police to file paperwork and obtain approval for the August 18th date. The team is tentatively aiming to organize a march to the Capitol that will take place prior to the rally. LaTourette says that marching is dependent on cooperation from the National Parks Service, the Capitol Police, and Metro DC.

Volunteer committees are forming to manage publicity, speakers, and other aspects of the march. Help is needed to coordinate supplies and facilities in preparation for and on the day of the event, and volunteers with medical training are in especially high demand.

Donations from individuals and organizations are also being collected to support the rally. Sponsors can learn more about funding options by visiting www.wearewoman.us/p/donate.html. A CafePress store has also been created for both fundraising and visibility.

Erin Nanasi, whose “We Are Warriors” video inspired the march, explains how We Are Woman is drawing people from all genders, races, backgrounds, and political ideologies to the cause: “For those of you who think this march is just about women's issues, you're wrong. Understand that we, women, are at the forefront of this movement, but we are not alone. Anyone, everyone, who does not fit the new GOP's narrow view of what America should be is in danger.”

In anticipation of November's critical presidential election and in retaliation for more than a thousand anti-women laws being passed through state houses throughout the United States, We Are Woman expects the gathering to attract every bit as much support as the 2004 March for Women's Lives.

The five co-founders of the march say that they are looking forward to, "Joining with others all over the country to stand shoulder to shoulder and shout 'No more!'"
